1. Operation details
Internal number: OB_019 + OB_023
Operational regime: Combination List
Source image: Photograph and Printed Image
Operational description:
The image is printed with toner. It is submerged in a tray of water. Drops of ink are gradually added using a syringe —Magenta-Green-Yellow-Blue-Black— and the process is recorded. Then, a 40/60 recognizability result is chosen to be processed through the Tonal Matrix script, which grids the image into a layout with 156 different tones. The tonal squares are then reorganized.
2. Tools
Tools / medium:
- Toner printing
- Water and ink
- Script
3. Variables
Controlled variables:
- Number of tones
- Number of columns and rows in the grid
- Quality of the resulting image
- Ink colors
Uncontrolled / accidental variables:
- The entropy of the ink in the water

6. Crisis and formal-perceptual reading
Where the crisis occurs and the operation affects the visual grammar of the image: form, outline, color, figure/ground relationship, legibility, recognition, and support:
The crisis occurs with the ink floating in the water, covering and veiling the printed image at the bottom of the tray, affecting its entire visual grammar, primarily color and the figure-ground relationship. With the black ink, the image becomes destabilized and begins to take on more contrast and pictorial richness.
With the tonal script, the image enters a crisis regarding its legibility and the support; it loses track of the format in which it was produced, and by remapping with greater intensity, the image becomes abstract. Nevertheless, it gains visual richness and produces a new visual experience.
7. Final evaluation and artistic reference
Operation notes / what I learned:
Mixing physical intervention and translation of a representation system via an algorithm makes the image appealing due to the ambiguity of whether it was made physically or algorithmically.
