1. Operation data
Internal number: OB_019
Operational regime: Translation Between Representation Systems
Source image: Photographed image converted into a Tonal Matrix
Operational description:
Raster image is converted into a tonal grid, a 128x95 grid of 64 tones.
The tone numbers are swapped.
2. Tools and procedure
Tools / medium:
- Script
Technical procedure:
- tones are swapped in groups of three and the script is run
3. Variables
The tones are swapped in a controlled manner; there is a pictorial decision involved in this. The number of cells and the size of the grid.

6. Crisis and formal-perceptual reading
Main crisis: Tonal.
The operation affects the visual grammar of the image: shape, contour, color, figure/ground relationship, legibility, recognition, and support:
The contour and shape of the figure enter into crisis due to the tone swapping; the contours blend together when two similar tones are placed at the edges. The background does as well when changing tones and bringing together tones from, for example, the table and the wall.
7. Final evaluation and artistic reference
Operation notes / what I learned:
It is possible to control more than just an algorithmic operation; by changing the matrix to a simple tonal grid, one can decide how to resample the colors. And I need to view the past image to make more pictorial decisions, in the sense of where to swap the tones.
