1. Operation data

Internal number: OB_010
Operational regime: Algorithmic Transformation
Source image: Photograph

Operational description:
It is posterized so that the number of colors in the photo decreases. The image does not enter into crisis this way. It is forced by increasing contrast and brightness so that the image becomes destabilized.

2. Tools and procedure

Tools / medium:

  • Photoshop
  • iPhone camera

Script (2026-09 audit): Not applicable (operation performed in Photoshop, manual tool without code export).

Technical procedure:

  1. Posterize to the maximum
  2. Increase contrast and brightness

3. Variables

Controlled variables:

  • Photoshop

Uncontrolled / accidental variables:

  • -

6. Crisis and formal-perceptual reading

Main crisis: loss of legibility due to tones and by forcing contrast and brightness.

In posterization, the image enters into crisis because of the colors; form begins to be lost due to the color mixture, and figure and ground merge, creating passages of white. After modifying and increasing brightness and contrast, these unions of figure and ground increase. To finally break the image, the brightness is increased and it turns white. It is not possible to reach black.

7. Final evaluation and artistic reference

Question for the operation:
Does this operation truly put the image into crisis or does it only function as an aesthetic effect?
No, if the image is forced it can produce a crisis, but it is more aesthetic, although it still breaks it.

Operation notes / what I learned:
Posterization by itself does not work, but it creates a good aesthetic effect; colors that were not there before are produced in the blacks.
